E-commerce is still rapidly growing, but the proportion of cross-border e-commerce grows even faster. Around 2020 the commercial value will be around 6.8 billion EURO, according International Postal Corporation, an association of 24 delivery companies throughout Europe, North America and Asia, as we can read in the same article. Belgians and Germans online regularly on Dutch web sites, creating considerable opportunities for the Dutch e-commerce warehouses. The logistics manager plays a crucial role in this process.
Automation = important
Logistics processes should be more than ever before tailored to the customer, and we mean the end user. Automation plays an extremely important role. The more processes are being automated, the more you will be able to deliver accurate and efficient.
The logistics manager today thinks like a marketing manager. The market developments are defining the work and the processes in the warehouse. The e-commerce has a large impact on delivery times, inventory management and picking method. If a product is out of stock, can lead to the loss of a customer. For 3PL companies, this is even more true.
The combination of the right hardware and software will make sure the logistic service provider can avoid disappointments amongst his customers. Systems have to be flexible. The environment is changing rapidly and due to the ever-increasing technological developments, this will stay like this. Logistics service providers in e-commerce need to be able to move quickly. It is the customer who decides when and how he wants to be receive his orders. The pressure on the logistic system is increasing, especially now packets are even delivered on Sundays.
With the still rapidly growing market in mobile devices and new applications for ordering and payment for example, it is important to follow these developments closely and preferably to stay ahead of them. The times of only shipping boxes are really gone. The logistic manager of today has to have a clear vision and is able to anticipate developments with strong actions.
