Now the first regions in the Netherlands are approaching the end of the summer vacation, it is also a good time for a warehouse or logistics manager to quickly dive back into our field of expertise. We limit ourselves in this article to the subject of “robotics” at it seems to be the most “trending” topic lately. Below a selection from recently published articles.

Roadmap

We do not start with an article. On the well-known Dutch platform www.logistiek.nl  interested parties can download a "Roadmap Robotics in warehousing". This informative document helps companies making the right choices regarding robotization. It describes a large number of the decision criteria as to whether or not to invest and relates the various considerations to each other. The structure of a step-by-step plan is very helpful:

Step 1 - Determine whether robots fit the strategic picture

Step 2 - Check whether robots actually can improve the processes

Step 3 - Discover which robotic solution fits best

Step 4 - Develop a realistic implementation plan

The article mentioned that the scalability of a solution should also be carefully considered when purchasing. We cannot agree enough with that.

Download it and read it in these last days of the holiday.

Logistics Management

Then on to the first article. This piece by Roberto Michel appeared on Logistics Management in July. He signals the adoption of autonomous, mobile robots in the American distribution centres. This is partly due to the shortage on the labour market and the associated reduction in walking distances. But he sees even more benefits such as flexibility and scalability; especially compared to other automatic systems. Various suppliers are reviewed and we would like to add the Irish Eiratech, which are quickly building up a reputation on mainland Europe.

Logistics Manager

The British Logistics manager issued a special supplement, Robotics & Innovation, in July, containing several interesting articles. The magazine can be read online. Of course, lots of attention is given to the main trends, but also to the possible negative consequences for "human" jobs. As with any industrial innovation, jobs will disappear, but new opportunities will also arise. The need for society to respond to robot adoption in time is certainly there, but the advancement of these machines in the modern warehouse is inevitable.

ValueChain

Let’s move on to Belgium. Publisher ValueChain organized a "Warehouse of the Future" seminar and speaker PhD MBA Stefan Rusu gave his vision of the warehouse of tomorrow, viewed from the perspective of Industry 4.0. The emphasis is on the so-called AST concept = adaptable, scalable & transferable. Rusu indicates that most warehouses in the world are still fairly traditional and the new technologies must therefore also be easily implemented in existing warehouses. After all, warehouses have gradations of mechanization / automation and not all activities have to be converted.

Curious to see robots in action? We will pay extra attention to these machines at our stand at the Logistica exhibition (5-7 November 2019)and will show a "live" setup by Eiratech. Call or mail us for entrance tickets.
