New high bay warehouse for Coldservice

Coldservice, provider of logistic services, chose Consoveyo as their partner for setting up a new high-rise warehouse in Veghel. The warehouse will complement the existing storage facilities. The ASRS (automated storage & retrieval system) comes from Consoveyo and Dexion delivers the high bay rackings. Costo takes care of the complete project coordination.

Coldservice is a young company; It was established in 2013. It offers complete services for cooling, freezing, tempering, packaging and / or storing temperature sensitive products. In addition, Coldservice also provides (inter)national transport services. The company experienced a turbulent growth from the beginnings and has already had several building extensions. The high-rise warehouse needs to be able to cope with the  growth for the near future, but the company is also taking over companies to ensure continuity.

A turbulent start

Maickel Versantvoort, Managing Director at Coldservice, says: "After building years of experience elsewhere, I started, together with some partners Coldservice in 2013. We focus on frozen/cooled products. As we aim for the highest levels of flexibility we saw our first 16,000 pallet locations filling up within 4 weeks. Currently we have 38,000 pallet locations available, but that is not enough. The new high-bay warehouse will provide another 12,000 pallet locations." The warehouse in its current form has 2 separate expeditions with 6 docking sites each. One is used for refrigerated items and the other for frozen foods. The freezer side mainly receives goods with a relatively low pallet weight and they are transported to and from the freezer storage with conveyor systems. Today, Veghel mainly stores dairy, potatoes and dyes. Pallets are stored entirely; there is no piece picking. The new building will only store fully frozen goods and will be fully automated.

Highly compact storage

The (freestanding) pallet rackings in the new warehouse will be served with two rail guided warehouse cranes of almost 22 meters high. The pallets can be stored up to 8 pallets deep, so the warehouse can realize a very high storage density. Off the crane, the pallets are moved horizontally with a shuttle. The warehouse cranes each work in their own aisle of almost 100 meters long. "Our current warehouse already had a high storage density due to the use of mobile pallet rackings," Maickel continues.

“In our search for the right system for the new warehouse, we ended up with analysing

and preferring a fully automated system. Given the high degree of flexibility in our operations, this outcome was not entirely anticipated. However, the figures do not lie. We will now be able to process 120 pallets per hour, which is twice as much as today. This speed and capacity are also a big advantage towards our carriers. It is no surprise therefor, that our high-bay warehouse will store fast movers. "

What is completely new compared to the current working methods, are the refrigeration boxes for the temporary storing of pallets during reception and dispatch. Loading and unloading of refrigerated products usually requires a very tight schedule and very short dock times, and unfortunately it could happen that lorries arrived later than expected. The ready-to-pick pallets had then to be returned into the refrigerated space, which means all the way back into the warehouse. The new boxes contain aisles in which the pallets can be placed at a temperature of -20˚ Celsius. On both sides are doors to keep the temperature optimal and create the ideal buffer zone.

“It turned out that Consoveyo, Costo and Dexion all had considerable experience with the processes in a cold store application,” Maickel explains. “We visited various projects and we came quickly to the conclusion that this project would be managed well by Costo.” Coldservice will adopt a new WMS and this system will be connected to the  WCS, which is controlling the whole warehouse system.

Currently, the construction is in progress. When operational the high-bay warehouse magazine will function 24 hours a day.
