Working ergonomically and less errors were starting points
At the end of last year, Costo developed and delivered a semi-automatic system at a logistics services provider in Oud Gastel, the Netherlands. Costo replaced the manual packaging process on one of the lines with a conveyor system, together with equipment such as a weighing unit, a label applicator, input systems for the accompanying documents and a box closing machine. The whole set-up is being managed by the Warehouse Control System (WCS) of Xtend.
The project fits the philosophy of the services provider, which wanted to create ideal working conditions and optimize the quality of the packaging process. This specific process is carried out for a customer whose outgoing boxes are relatively heavy. From the picking area, trolleys are used to transport the boxes to the packing area. To prevent unnecessary lifting and bending over, the boxes can easily be placed from the trolley onto the conveyor.
After the boxes have travelled through all automated stages (weighing, inserting documents, applying labels including box ID, box closure) they are sorted for the right carrier and placed on pallets for shipment.
Various scenarios were carefully studied in advance to achieve the maximum return. In addition to the above mentioned goals, issues such as checking master data and error-free sorting for the carrier were also taken into account to determine the final configuration.
The automated packaging line was put into operation in December 2018.
